My encounter with the Mayan people of Yucatan in 2008 is what started this aventure. I began working with a family in Tixkokob to bring their incredible hammocks to North America. We created the brand : Hammock Yucatan. In those days there were just a few distributors importing traditionnal hammocks and caring for the families who make them.
Now, any type of retailer (furniture, hardware stores, chain stores,etc.) can sell products that they know nothing about and most of the time they haven't seen. The only thing that matter is the price. The Chinese cheap hammocks prices are hitting my Mayan and Thai friends hard. Too bad for the tradition and the families who are loosing their source of income.
I try to help them by keeping my prices as low as possible, working with a thin margin. They need work.
